Marmeleiro-do-mato (Croton sonderianus) is a species of shrub predominant in the caatinga, also known in some locations in the interior of the Northeast as purple quince, Memeleiro, Mermeleiro and Meleiro. The plant reaches four meters in height and its trunk is widely used for the manufacture of barbecue skewers. Croton sonderianus is the version known as Purple Quince, because the version called White Quince (Croton blanchetianus) used in cachaça bark is another species of the genus Croton
